Book a Sushi Making Class atRolling your own sushi is easier than it looks, and a lot more fun than you expect. At La Cucina at the Market, our Sushi: Rolling Our Own class puts you at the counter with a knife, a mat, and a chef who shows you every step. You do not sit and watch. You make each roll with your own hands.
The class runs on Monday nights in our private kitchen at 1206 Arch Street in Center City Philadelphia. Seats are $97 per person, and the evening lasts about three hours. Bring your own wine, beer, or sake to enjoy while you roll. A Real Teaching Kitchen, Not A Loud BarHere is the difference that matters. Many sushi classes around the city run inside busy breweries and event rooms. Guests often say they could barely hear the instructor over the noise. That is a hard way to learn a new skill.
Our kitchen is quiet and built for teaching. You can hear the chef, ask questions, and actually see what your hands are doing. Small details make or break a roll, so being able to focus changes everything. “I just wanted to reach out and thank you and your team for an amazing cooking/team building experience! The food was delicious and everything turned out great! Thanks again! We will definitely be back!” — Arthur |

What You Will LearnWe start at the very beginning, so no experience is needed. First you learn how to cook and season sushi rice the right way. That step alone is where most home cooks go wrong. The rice needs the right texture and a careful touch of seasoned rice vinegar.
From there, our chef guides you through slicing and layering your fillings. You learn how to use the bamboo mat and how much pressure keeps a roll tight without crushing it. You keep your hands damp so the rice does not stick, a simple trick that makes a huge difference. By the end, you will have rolled and sliced several rolls yourself, plated and ready to eat. These are skills you keep for life, not just for one night. We work with sushi-grade fish, so you get the real thing. If you prefer vegetables, we can set you up with veggie rolls instead. Just let us know when you book. |
Your Evening, Start To FinishThe night runs about three hours. We begin with a welcome reception of cheese and charcuterie while everyone arrives and settles in. Then the hands-on rolling begins at your station.
All of your ingredients and tools are set out and ready. You do not need to bring anything but yourself and a drink. Our chefs stay with you the whole time, so you are never stuck. Once your rolls are done, you sit down and eat what you made. It is a full, relaxed evening, not a quick demo. You leave knowing how to roll at home, which is a skill that impresses people for years. Because it is BYOB, you can bring a bottle you love. Sake, crisp white wine, and cold beer all pair well. We provide sparkling water too. |
Great For Date Nights And Small GroupsThis makes a fun and different date night. You and your partner work side by side, and there is a lot to laugh about while you learn. It beats another quiet dinner across a table.
It also works for friend groups, birthdays, and small celebrations. Cooking together breaks the ice faster than drinks alone. Corporate teams enjoy it too. A sushi night is a relaxed way to bring coworkers together outside the office, and it always gets people talking. If you want the kitchen to yourselves, ask us about a private night for your group. We can plan it around your date and headcount. |
What Makes A Great RollGood sushi is about balance. The rice should be tender and lightly seasoned, never heavy. The fish should be fresh and cut clean. The fillings should add texture without crowding the roll.
Our chef shares the small habits that pull it all together. You learn how much rice to spread, how to keep your fillings centered, and how to cut without tearing the roll. None of it is hard once you see it done up close. That is the real value of learning in person instead of from a video. |
A Skill Worth HavingLearning to roll sushi pays off for years. Once you know the basics, you can make a fresh batch at home for a fraction of takeout prices. You can impress friends at a dinner party or turn a quiet weeknight into something special.
The technique is simple once you have done it with guidance. Presentation is part of the fun too. You will learn how to slice a roll cleanly and arrange it so it looks as good as it tastes. That is the kind of thing you keep doing long after the class ends. |
